Sathya Sai Baba - rare questions
We continue our series of articles dedicated to Sai Baba. You can learn more about his biography from other articles on this website. In this article, we continue to discuss amazing stories about his life, miracles and spiritual instructions. Only Sai Baba could decide which visitor needed direct communication with him more, then Baba personally invited this person and provided a unique opportunity to ask questions.
General meetings were called Darshan, they were held in a large hall, usually several tens of thousands of people attended such meetings. Occasionally some had the opportunity to speak personally with Sai Baba in his small room. These face-to-face meetings were called interviews, and they usually lasted an hour or an hour and a half.
I was lucky enough to be present at the interviews. Sometimes Sai Baba invited me personally, and sometimes together with this or that group. He invited ten to twenty people for interviews. Each year the number of visitors increased, and there were fewer opportunities to get a personal audience.
In the 90s, Russian-speaking groups came for a month. Sometimes such groups received interviews with Sai Baba. He knew that people needed direct communication with him, and invited them to a separate room. Each time it was the decision of Sathya Sai Baba, and it was impossible to go and sign up for an audience, only he decided who he wanted and had to talk directly.
When Sai Baba went out for the morning and evening programs, visitors sat in the huge hall right on the floor on small rugs, while Sai slowly walked between the rows of the crowd. Sometimes he could linger for a minute next to someone and speak. When he invited people for an interview, they went to the entrance to a special room.
Baba invited small groups, and the conversation lasted for an hour or an hour and a half. Devotees from many countries came to him: Russians, Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Germans, French, Israelis, Iranians, Argentines, Mexicans. People from all over the world gathered in Sai's room. This room was small, everyone sat down on the floor in unison. In the very corner there was a chair where Sathya Sai Baba used to sit.
Sathya Sai Baba spoke all languages
In the 90s I had a little experience as a translator, so I was a little worried. When Hindus came to Sai, he communicated with them in any of the local Indian languages: Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali. When a group of foreigners came to him, the conversation was in English.
Most Russian-speaking people did not know English well in those days, which is why, in personal meetings he answered questions through translators. I had been a translator at such meetings many times. The main advantage of the translator was that I could often communicate directly with Sai.
I remember two unusual stories that happened in the 90s. These two events were extremely instructive for me, after that I was able to realize a lot. In those years I was taking my first steps as a translator for Sai and I was quite anxious during the first few interviews when I translated. I felt a lot of responsibility, but soon it became clear to me that there was nothing to worry about.
A woman from America came to Puttaparthi; she was an emigrant from Russia who had lived in the United States for many years. She spoke excellent English. She was asked to be a translator for one group. The best option, a translator who knew Russian and lived in the United States for many years, was fluent in English.
When the woman entered Sai's room, she translated a couple of phrases, then something happened in her mind, she stopped understanding English. embarrassed and dismayed she fell silent. Sathya Sai Baba continued to tell many things in English, the translator was silent and could not translate a word. She lost her knowledge of English only for an hour, immediately after the interview, her knowledge of English returned. The woman apologized for not being able to help people.
The whole group was offended, but people quickly realized that a real miracle had happened. Sai showed everyone that it was not so important whether you knew English or not. If he decided to turn off a person's mind, then his knowledge of English might temporarily disappear.
After a couple of weeks, Sai Baba invited another group from Russia. No one in the group could understand English. One woman who came from St. Petersburg could understand just a couple of phrases. She said that she had very little knowledge of English for proper translation. As soon as she entered the interview room, a miracle happened, for an hour she acquired perfect knowledge of English.
During the interview, the participants asked Sathya Sai Baba difficult questions, the woman perfectly translated both questions and answers. When the woman left the room, she realized that a miracle had happened. She did not know and did not understand English. People were also surprised, because everyone knew very well that the woman did not know foreign languages.
Much later, I found out that the woman had never been able to learn English, a few years later I met her at the ashram and was convinced that she could not speak English. However, for the hour of that interview, she had perfect knowledge. With this miracle, Sathya Sai Baba showed everyone that he could influence the mind of any person. These two miraculous experiences were very instructive for me. For a large number of people who lived in Puttaparthi then, it became clear that Sathya Sai Baba could temporarily turn on the potentials of any person's consciousness at his will, he could also temporarily turn off a person's capabilities. In truth, everything is in the hands of God.
Satya Sai Baba was fluent in all languages, it is difficult to believe in it, but it is a historical fact. A similar miracle is described in the New Testament. The apostles, having experienced the gifts of the Holy Spirit, began to speak fluently in different languages. We are not talking about human ability for linguistics, we are talking about divine ability to speak all languages.
India has many languages and a huge number of local dialects, each with a unique and dissimilar script. Sai's native language was Telugu, and he studied Hindi and some English at school. However, he has repeatedly shown his ability to speak any language using grammar and pronunciation to perfection.
Devotees from different parts of India visited Sai Baba, he could speak in his dialect with each visitor. Sai often quoted ancient sacred texts, he could easily speak Sanskrit. He spoke English with foreign devotees, but sometimes he could show the ability to understand and speak any language.
I personally translated for Russian-speaking groups during the interviews with Sathya Sai Baba from 1993 to 1999. I am sometimes asked how many interviews I have managed to get. At first I tried to write down dates and even kept a small diary describing some of the events that happened during the interview. Since the number of interviews increased, I stopped counting and registering their number.
Sometimes Sai invited me to translate during his conversations with Russian-speaking devotees, sometimes he invited me to speak in person. When I translated, I also had many chances to ask personal questions and talk about personal topics. As a translator I was very close to Sathya Sai Baba, so I always had many chances to discuss my questions.
I was a little worried during the first few interviews because it was a lot of responsibility. I wondered whether I could or not, whether I would be able to correctly understand and translate Sai Baba, whether I would be able to translate the message accurately enough, since I realized that I was not a professional translator.
When I was a little mistaken, incorrectly or completely inaccurately translated a phrase, then Baba would correct it. He did it in two different ways. Sometimes he told me that I had conveyed the meaning incorrectly, he repeated the same phrase again in English. Thus, Sai demonstrated that he understood everything perfectly.
Sometimes Sathya Sai Baba corrected my mistakes in a different way, he pronounced the phrase directly in pure Russian. This was perfectly heard by all the people present at the interview. Naturally, this instantly caused surprise. He pronounced the phrase in pure Russian, his pronunciation was perfect.
A question arises “why did he use a translator?” I suppose there were so many miracles around Sai that there were enough materializations and healings. Communicating with God is a truly unique experience, imagine if he spoke openly with each devotee in his own language. In this case, people would concentrate their attention exclusively on his ability to understand and speak in all languages. It was important to pay attention not to miracles, but to the wisdom of his words. Perhaps, in order not to distract people from the instructions, he spoke in English.
Sathya Sai Baba - Spiritual instruction and personal communication
I have seen many times how people miraculously transformed their destiny with the blessings of Sai, however behind these stories there was a tremendous spiritual effort of a person. During personal meetings, Sai Baba sat in an armchair, the rest of the present sat on the carpet, on the floor. He was like a conductor during these meetings. Some came with difficult spiritual questions, some had questions about family life and health. Sometimes people brought photos of friends and relatives for blessing.
Only Sai Baba decided how the meeting was going to take place. If he considered necessary, he allowed someone to ask a question. However, Sai could ignore another person if he saw that the person was not very sincere. He could ask someone “what is your question, what are your difficulties?” Only then did the visitor get the opportunity to ask his question.
Some visitors tried to interrupt other participants and ask their questions. In such cases, Sai Baba clearly and strictly made it understandable with whom he wanted to speak at that moment. Sometimes large groups came, but he could only communicate with one person during the whole meeting, while other participants just listened. There were such meetings when Sathya Sai Baba took turns talking with everyone who came. Everything was unpredictable each time.
When the devotees approached him with really important questions, Sathya Sai Baba listened attentively and gave deep answers. If visitors came who simply wanted to show off their intellect and knowledge, Sathya Sai Baba abruptly interrupted such “smart” people. If Sai Baba knew that the visitor was not entirely sincere, he could interrupt such a person and, in the presence of everyone, point out the hidden vices of the “clever” man. Only a person who was open and honest in his questions could receive comprehensive and deep answers and recommendations from Sathya Sai Baba.
Personal meetings took place in two adjoining rooms. One was a little more, people went there at the very beginning of the audience. Baba could invite people to the second small room for more intimate personal communication. The second room was quite small, and there was also an armchair. The second room could accommodate no more than five people. In a small room, Sathya Sai Baba communicated very closely, he became more a close friend.
In the first, large room, the visitors sat at a short distance from him, the communication was a little more strict. In the second, small room, the distance between the devotees and Sai disappeared. In the small room, more personal questions were asked. People sat on the carpet very close to Sai Baba. There was a feeling of family. Sathya Sai Baba ceased to be perceived as a famous guru, in a small room he became a close friend.
Anyone who could personally communicate with Sai Baba at least once remembered this experience forever. After direct communication with him for many hours or even for several days, people entered a state of light and bliss. After individual communication with Sai, you sought solitude, you did not want to talk, peace came in your soul, and the mind became silent. This condition sometimes lasted for several days, and some people had the feeling for several months. The experience of direct personal communication with him had a significant transformative power of influence on people.
Sai Baba took every question very seriously. If a devotee came with some question about family life, or health, Baba would just as attentively answer everyday questions as he did questions about meditation and spiritual practice. There were no secondary and unimportant questions for him. Every question that was essential for a person at the given moment on the spiritual path was also important for him.
People asked Sai for advice on how to deal with different situations, he was asked for support and blessings. Sai Baba sometimes reminded people that we should remember that each person was completely responsible for what happened in his life. Only you could go your own way and live life, only you were fully responsible for your thoughts, words and actions you took. He would not be able to meditate for you and realize the truth, as well as live your life. Only you could transform life, only you personally were the creator of your own happiness.
You should not shift responsibility for the events of your life onto him, expecting that he would transform and settle difficulties, while you would be inactive, that could not happen. Only you can go through the path of practice and spiritual evolution. No one can practice meditation for you and realize the truth. It is impossible to ask Krishna, Buddha or Jesus to pray and meditate for you, you should do it exclusively on your own.
If you strive to transform your life, you can achieve this only by changing yourself. Sai can help and give wise recommendations and advice, bless for the achievement of goals and objectives in life. In order to really use the energy received from Sathya Sai Baba, you should work hard on your own.
I have seen many people who amazingly and miraculously transformed their destiny with the blessings that Sai Baba gave, but behind all the wonderful stories of healings and transformations were persistent spiritual practices of the person himself.
Sathya Sai Baba - miracles and materialization
During individual meetings, Sai Baba often materialized all sorts of objects, such as a Rudraksha rosary, gold and silver rings, medallions depicting deities. Materialization is truly a great miracle, an object that never existed, suddenly appeared from a flash of light.
I saw many times how Baba materialized objects. Outwardly, this process looked like this: he made circular movements with his hand, after a moment a bright flash occurred in the center of the palm, sometimes accompanied by an electric crack, then an object instantly appeared from this flash.
Materializations more often came from a flash of bright light, and were accompanied by an electric sound, but sometimes it looked different. He also made soft circular movements with his hand, several small luminous balls suddenly appeared from the center of his palm, an object instantly appeared from the luminous balls. There were times when Baba could materialize an object without any flash, in such cases the objects would appear in his palm.
Being always present at individual meetings as a translator, I sat next to his right hand, so I could observe the process of materialization very well. As soon as he began to make circular movements with his hand, it became clear to me that soon there would be a materialization. At these moments, I tried to look more closely at the process in order to see all the details of the miracle.
Oddly enough, least of all I was amazed and interested in the materialized object, which appeared from the hand of Sai Baba. For me, energetic vibrations were more essential at the moment of materialization. This was especially felt when it was accompanied by flashes of bright light.
Being very close to Sai Baba, during these moments of materialization, I had the opportunity to go through all kinds of experiences, a sharp cold or a heat wave. More often he performed materializations in a room, but sometimes this miracle took place in a large hall when many thousands of people were present.
Sathya Sai Baba - materialized objects
I prefer to call the unique objects materialized by Sathya Sai Baba amulets. These items were sometimes gold or silver. He materialized various rings and rosary beads, amulets, even bracelets and gold chains, sometimes watches. Each of the items always had a deep symbolic meaning. Devotees and visitors discussed the profound meaning of Sathya Sai Baba's materialized objects. I think it was difficult to understand their true meaning.
Sathya Sai Baba was born in 1926 and left the world in 2011, in his previous incarnation he lived in the very west of India, in a city called Shirdi. That is why he was called Shirdi Sai Baba. The approximate dates of his life are 1836-1918.
Sai Baba sometimes materialized silver rings depicting Shirdi Sai Baba. It was believed that those devotees who received a ring with Shirdi Sai as a gift from Sathya Sai lived with him in the past in the city of Shirdi. Rosary beads played a special role among materializations. If the guru gives a rosary in India, then it marks acceptance as a disciple. The tradition of blessing the rosary exists in Buddhism and Sufism, as well as in Christianity.
Sathya Sai Baba gave materialized rosary from different materials, sometimes he gave a rosary from the seeds of the Rudraksha tree, which mythologically symbolizes Shiva. Such beads symbolize many things, on the one hand, intensive ascetic practice and renunciation, but they also denote social success, power.
Tulasi rosary is the symbol of Krishna. This is the harmony of the spiritual and the material in life. Tulasi tree rosary is a blessing for happiness, family life, spiritual progress and prosperity. There were also beads made of rock crystal, they carry the blessings of the goddess Saraswati, knowledge, education and wisdom.
People have used the prayer beads given by Sathya Sai Baba in very different ways. With the help of a rosary, the number of repeated mantras is usually counted, it is also possible to wear a rosary around the neck. The energy of the sacred rosary provides protection and vitality.
Sathya Sai Baba mantras
There are many mantras associated with the Sai Baba tradition. There are also unique recordings of the voice of Sathya Sai. The practice of mantras is simple at first glance, but very effective. People of any nationality and religion can practice mantras. That is why Sathya Sai Baba recommended everyone to practice various mantras. These practices harmonize emotional states and allow one to advance in the inner experience of spiritual knowledge.
At the first stage, it is quite useful to listen to mantras in the recording, and then move on to independent practice. In order to study the practice of mantra in more detail, it is recommended to attend a seminar and undergo training under the guidance of a teacher in Mantra Yoga.
